Taking a walk along the outside of your home checking for cracks in the foundation is a good way to check for soil settlement; However, Cracks that appear on the inside of the home can be just as indicative. Check along the corners of doors and windows for cracks like these. Where adjacent walls come together is also a good place to look.
Light socket cracks
When walls are cut or come together, the structural integrity is sacrificed. Becoming weaker, these become the first areas to suffer from soil settlement.

Cracks appearing from ornery of door frames is very common. This home clearly has some soil settlement.
Sister cracks
